TOYMAKERWINNERSOn March 20, the Westport Arts Center celebrated creativity and toy design at Family Art Day: All About Toys.  Children of all ages and their families worked together to color, design, build and experiment with unusual materials.

As part of the event, winners were announced in the fifth annual Toy Maker’s Competition. The Competition invited children ages 5-12 to submit original toy designs that were unique, original and imaginative, easy to use and understand, and could be recreated and produced in a real life scenario.

Finalists in the competition presented their toy designs to judges Lindsay Heffernan, Westport Arts Center’s Director of Education, and Dave Yearwood, general manager of Westport’s Shake Shack.

The event was generously sponsored by Shake Shack of Westport and Learning Express Toys of Westport.

Selected winners were:

Age 5-6:

  • First Place: Rose Porosoff, Steery Wheely
  • Second Place: Morgan Bernard, Make Your Own Snowman/3D Princess Plates

Age 7-9:

  • First Place: Jonathan Stekloff, Magical Maze
  • Second Place: Benjamin Porosoff, Dot by Dot ABC

Age 10-12

First place winners in each of the three age groups (ages 5-6, 7-9, and 10-12) received a $50 Shake Shack Gift Card, a Boundless Brooklyn Shake Shack Model Kit, and a scholarship to a Westport Arts Center summer camp of their choice.  Second place winners for ages 5-6 and 7-9 received a gift certificate to the Westport Arts Center and a gift basket of toys designed to delight, provided by Learning Express Toys of Westport.

Family Art Day: All About Toys is a favorite theme of local families where each young artist can choose their favorite project or create as many as they can. This year’s projects included three-dimensional block puzzles, do-it-yourself flying saucers that fly without batteries or electricity, a printmaking memory game, and an upcycled toy mobile that repurposed old and gently used toy pieces into a new decorative art form. Each project required kids to problem-solve and think critically about the process of creation in addition to designing a fun and funky finished product.
